My Kiwanis Idol
Walter Sellers

1925 - 2008
I saw Walter Sellers on Kiwanis International’s largest stage during 1997-1998 as our President. I had been a Lt. Governor, but I had no aspirations for any further leadership in Kiwanis. As I marveled at the character, charm and charisma of this man of color, I said deep down in my heart, “I could do that.” A dream was not born, but a pride in my race and a new pride in Kiwanis was incubated.
I let Walter know how much inspiration he was every time I met him and Irene. One highlight of my Kiwanis experience was serving with Walter on the International Diversity Committee in 2003-2004. Without Walter’s leadership, we would not have likely passed a resolution on Diversity in Orlando in 2008.
In Hawaii, as I ran for International Trustee, Walter was the “Meet the Candidate Moderator”. Standing on the same stage next to him answering questions, gave me a sense of assurance that was very comforting. He never made a personal remark to me about my campaign, but I felt his heart, his presence, and his spirit.
The poet Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote, “I am a part of all that I have met.” I am humbled and blessed to have had my mentor, my hero, my friend - Walter Sellers play a part in my life. Had we never spoken or never officially met, just seeing him in the position of President was inspiration enough. I would not likely be in the position I am in today had it not been for Walter.
When I spoke to him last year about my possible run for International VP, he simply said, “You can do it”. As leaders in Kiwanis, beware of the life you lead, you never know when you will provide a touch to someone.
