A Club Web Officer

By Sylvester Neal: Trustee 2005-2008

Club President-Elects are beginning preparations for their 2007-2008 year of leadership. Club Office Training is taking place in all Districts. With increased use of telecommunications, sometimes it is difficult for a Club President to stay informed and updated in this information age. Maybe it’s time to consider additional assistance.

Kiwanis International and Districts are increasingly utilizing the internet as a medium for education and communications. It is not only cost effective, but an efficient way to reach a large membership. The problem is that, without a designated web monitor, key information remains stored in the system.

It is difficult for a busy President, or even the secretary, to keep updated without someone assigned to be the club web information officer. Each club usually has someone with the talent and time to take on this duty. Their duty would be to surf the Kiwanis web pages for information relevant to the club and members. They would then report to the board of directors at their monthly meeting to pass on information.

As a club President, you have addressed several important functions of leadership. You have created a meaningful and important job for someone who might not otherwise be actively involved. This could provide an opportunity for a non-attending or honorary member to make a contribution to the club. It could be a great opportunity for a new computer-minded member to immediately get involved and utilize their talents. Or, it may be great for a member who is physically challenged and loves working with computers.

Use your imagination. Give this new job an important title. Make a big deal of the President’s special appointment. You might see special things happening in your club.
